The stigma of couple-run business ending in divorce is beginning to diminish as couples learn to mix business and pleasure, thus having the wealth and freedom lifestyle they design.
It is true that we have a 50% divorce rate in the U.S. However, couples in business together are learning to become power couples and have become stronger together in every aspect of their life.
In fact, according to Stewart Friedman, professor of management at Wharton Business School, "The trust you have in your spouse (as a co-manager) is greater than you are likely to have with any other business partner in your life."
If you're thinking about going into business with your significant other, then here are some secrets to not only having a successful business, but mixing business and pleasure.
Start a business you are both passionate about: If you have had the romantic walk on the beach or a romantic conversation over dinner about starting a business together, pursue the business you are both passionate about. If both of you are deeply passionate about your business, you will both love being at work, love talking about your work, and love working together at it. You will both get up in the morning inspired about your day and this success.
Outsource your house care: One of the biggest areas of couple-run business contention is that 83% of the women, who manage a business, still have to manage the home. Outsource as much of your housekeeping, landscaping and cooking as you can. It's inexpensive and will free up your spouse's time as well as give them a cheerful disposition. The hours that you would spend doing these jobs can be spent having a romantic dinner or date night.
Practice having a workcation: When I make quarterly goals with my spouse, we leave the office. In fact, we leave town and go to a nice place, by the beach, in a great hotel, in the mountains, wherever our heart calls. We spend time playing hard and working hard. We sleep in, go to breakfast and create our next quarter's goals, talk about work issues and create the plans necessary to grow ourselves and our business. We go over our company's reports and make goals together and feel refreshed, inspired and united on a common goal. This gives us a strong alliance.
Having a business with your spouse is work. It's fabulous work that if done with discernment can help you both bring out your greatest potential. This doesn't have to be painful and exhausting; you can mix business and pleasure and still achieve success together.
